800+ Years of monk fruit history

Buddhist monks discovered the sweetest secret in the world.

In the mist-covered highlands of Guilin, China, over 800 years ago, Buddhist monks cultivated a small, round fruit — Luo Han Guo. They treasured it not just for its extraordinary sweetness, but for its remarkable healing properties.

They called it the Immortal’s Fruit. They brewed it into teas. They used it to treat illness and believed it promoted long life. For centuries, this fruit stayed their closely guarded secret.

Today, we’ve brought it to India for the first time — paired with erythritol, a naturally occurring compound found in fruits — to give you the same sweetness you’ve always loved, with zero calories and zero effect on your blood sugar.

The monks kept their secret for eight centuries. We think India has waited long enough.

About monk fruit +
Monk fruit (Luo Han Guo) is a small round fruit native to the highlands of Guilin, China. Buddhist monks cultivated it as early as the 13th century for its intense sweetness and medicinal properties. The sweetness comes from mogrosides — antioxidant compounds that are 200–300× sweeter than sugar but contain zero calories and cause zero blood sugar response.

“My doctor told me to cut sugar six months ago. I’ve been miserable. This is the first thing I’ve tried that actually lets me have my morning chai without guilt. My husband can’t even tell I switched.”

Sunita R. · Delhi
★★★★★

“I was sceptical. Every sweetener I’ve tried has that weird aftertaste. This one doesn’t. I put it in my coffee, my protein shake, even tried it in kheer — works perfectly in all of them.”

Arjun M. · Bangalore
★★★★★

“The 1:1 ratio is the thing that makes this work for me. I don’t have to think. I just add the same amount I always did. My blood sugar has been much more stable since I started.”

Everything you want to know

Is it really a 1:1 replacement for sugar?
Yes. This is the thing we’re most proud of. One teaspoon of The Monk Company sweetener gives you the exact same sweetness as one teaspoon of regular sugar. No adjusting, no guessing.
Can diabetics use this?
The Monk Company has a glycaemic index of zero — it causes no blood sugar response. Many diabetics and pre-diabetics use monk fruit sweetener safely. Always consult your doctor about dietary changes.
What does it taste like?
It tastes like sugar. The monk fruit extract provides clean sweetness, and the erythritol balances it to match sugar’s profile. There’s no bitter or chemical aftertaste that plagues many other sweeteners.
Can I cook and bake with it?
Absolutely. The Monk Company sweetener is heat stable and works in everything from chai to halwa to baked goods. It doesn’t caramelise the way sugar does, but for most Indian cooking this is not an issue.
What is erythritol?
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in fruits like grapes, watermelons and pears. It has zero calories and zero glycaemic impact, and unlike some sugar alcohols, it is very well tolerated by most people.
How should I store it?
Store in a cool, dry place, away from moisture. The jar is resealable. Monk fruit sweetener doesn’t expire quickly — it has a long shelf life when kept away from humidity.
